Eleventh October is a day I am looking forward to celebrating. The international day of the girl child, the day we appreciate the struggles the woman goes through. This is a day that very few recognize the true amount of appreciation that the girl child needs to receive.

Some of the most vital discussions of this day would be femicide. According to the UN, men kill one hundred and thirty-seven women every day all over the world. This is according to studies released in November of last year. This is heartbreaking, but most definitely the bitter truth.

The numbers of women either subjected to violence emotionally or physically are countless in number. One life taken is one too many. Recognizing the signs Early enough is crucial in the prevention of a calamity.

Emotional abuse is the leeway to physical abuse and it is one thing many tend to ignore. This may include one calling you names and always yelling at you; .being told you are not good enough is not right. If at all, your guy does not believe in your pursuit it is high time you walk out of that toxic relationship. A relationship should be one of shared values and interests. A relationship should influence one’s life positively. Men expressing their dominance by belittling the woman are a very low way of living.

If at all each time you try to have a conversation with your man he throws punches and breaks things, it is time you go away from such a situation. The use of intimidation as the ultimate form of power and control is not the way to go. Individuals need to rethink their reasons for being in a relationship and acting accordingly. Small practices build up to habit and habits create one’s character. The thought that one day someone will change is very much uncalled for as it is not for you to change him or her but rather for him or her to seek the change. Holding on to a certain unconducive environment in the hope that one-day things will look up is lying to oneself. It might be in their nature to do what they are doing.

I recently heard of a case of a woman brutally beaten up by the boyfriend, though the man was apprehended we could prevent ourselves from getting to such a point.

Walk away from any form of malice, injustice or any relationship that is draining you. Ladies let us take charge of our own lives. As a society, we need to stand up against gender-based violence. Man or woman, it is our sole responsibility to fight for our own. Some individuals are scared to make the decision to walk away from a relationship. It is up to us to help them realize that they are far more precious than any relationship title. There is life past that relationship, more to life than taking in the crap and tolerating mistreatment.

Do not tolerate, gender-based violence, fight it!

Always Give an ear, listen to the wisdom, locate the wisdom, ask questions be inquisitive. Know your music. Love your movies. Read books.

Be the alpha in your own life: take in the wisdom
I am one person who enjoys talking, speaking out, expressing myself. One thing I am learning is to listen more to give an ear for in talking you are saying what you already know but in listening to you get to add to your plate, to learn what you do not know.

What I find resourceful are books. We can gain knowledge from many avenues. One ought to be open-minded to be able to appreciate the knowledge. Different songs have a counsel, a wise word, and an inspiration that keeps people going. I have a favourite artist whom I listen to; this keeps me motivated, to keep going. I suppose each person looks for their best-suited taste and simply goes for it. Movies based on true stories are motivational. Beautiful and resourceful artistic work communicates a lot. The pieces of poetry are also inspiring our religious leaders do speak wisdom. Speakers like ‘Steve Harvey’ are legendary simply because they have tones of knowledge that everyone is seeking. Listening to such reality television could be very impactful. It is said, that we should not pick up everything we watch but most definitely, we can do the filtering and pick what is beneficial. I mean knowledge is everywhere we are the ones to seek it, the YouTube, googling the list endless.

What of those who do not listen to music? You may ask; the answer is simple, look around you, with each passing minute there something new we learn. Look at how the kids are appreciative of small things; take an example of how a parent will always know when something has changed. How football unites individuals, how individuals are seeking hope.

There is nothing that sells as much as hope, that is why churches crop up each passing day but when we learn to question, learn to listen we can salvage ourselves from the pangs of the malicious, controversial individuals out to seek the money. Getting to learn that with each day there will always be a challenge list is endless but being able to counter the challenge shows the level of wisdom. Too many individuals are being conned.

Daktari was LoBiondo we did see the queues that led to the said doctor, all in a bid to seek hope. However, we saw that it was just but a shame. We learn to analyse and take in the wisdom. Too many individuals are being conned.

Let us appreciate those individuals who make time to advise us, take time to encourage individuality. Learn to listen more as in every word given there is the knowledge but understand that we do not have to take everything in, we should analyse, keep what is beneficial. Learn to take charge, be the alphas in our own life for we are who we are and most definitely, if we do not allow ourselves to run our own lives. Some individuals will come in and run it.
With knowledge comes wisdom, let us learn to listen rather than just hearing.

EDDY PETER, commonly known as Zack on screen, a full-time actor with two wives Dama and Toni, showcasing on KTN. He walked away with last year’s award of the Best lead actor in TV drama at the Kalasha awards.

Who exactly is Eddy peter?

Eddy is a very simple person. I am married, I have three children. I put God first in everything I do. I am passionate in all I do. I love spending time with my family and every free time I get, I spend with them. I most definitely do appreciate my friends.

When did your passion for acting start?

I started acting way back in kindergarten, I played the role of Joseph back then. I did a lot of acting in high school. I stopped for some time when I cleared school to focus on some other things. In 2010 embarked on professional acting. I have been in this industry since then.

When was your big breakthrough?

From the many small gigs that I did, people recognized my potential. The first time I appeared on a TV show was on changing times and that gave me mileage. The first film I did was called Shattered. In this movie, I was working with big names in the industry whom I still work with. Rita Dominic was one of them. I was playing the role of uncle to Rita Dominic.

What did winning the Kalasha as best lead actor mean for you?

Since 2010, I have been working hard trying to give my best in every project I lay my hands on. Winning the award was an assurance that my efforts were boring fruits. It was very meaningful to me.

What is the biggest hurdle that you have faced in your career?

The biggest hurdle is when I go for auditions and am told I am not a Kenyan. I am a Kenyan and being identified as an outsider is very annoying. In this industry, you have to identify with rejection. What you do with rejection, however, makes the difference. It might make you better or weigh you down completely.

What is your biggest plan this year?

My biggest plan was to do theatre play and be in a movie. I have done two theatre plays already. One of them is a musical called ‘Mrs. Lucy goes to Africa ‘and the other is ‘Poison Ivy ‘. The film is what I’m working on. The biggest plan that I am working on would be to get to learn more in the different areas of my ‘career’ more so in directing.

How did you land the role ‘Zack’?

I went for auditions in ‘Insignia’ offices I was picked. Later on, they said I might not fit the role. I had to audition again and finally, I got it. I am happy because that is the role that landed me the Kalasha.

What would be your take on the entertainment industry 5 years ago and right now?

Honestly, this industry is a little bit weird. I would say 5 years ago there was more work. The workload went down with the introduction of digital televisions.
Right now more people survive with the art entertainment industry in Kenya. It is still light years from other industries. There are a lot of things being improved. People are working on systems so that we can have a proper industry. I believe it’s going to be better than what we think or what we already know.

What advice would you give to the young people trying to make it into the industry?

When getting to an industry you do not know, you must have a learning spirit. Be humble, listen and be ready to learn. Talent alone will not take you anywhere. There is a lot you have to mix to be a celebrated actor. You need your talent, passion, skill, and working. You need all that to be better than yesterday. Ultimately, you must have resilience, never give up, do have a tough skin.

Do actors have a platform that protects them?

Actors do have a platform to protect them; Kenya Actors Guild. If you are an actor in Kenya, you need to be in the Kenya Actors Guild. This will enable us to be able to build numbers. Therefore, we will be able to speak as one. We will even be in a position to have certain bills passed and people will listen.

How are royalties distributed and collected in the industry?

We do have royalties from CMO’S such as PRISK. They collect royalties and share them according to the work you have done. Government bodies given the mandate to collect royalties for different people and distribute them.

What is your take on ‘Rafiki’ and what did it mean to be banned?

I will not comment on it as I was a member of Oscar’s selection committee in Kenya. It was selecting a film to be nominated at the Oscar’s. We must respect the law, there is no back door.

We do understand you are a family guy, do you ever have situations where people ask about Dama and Toni? How do you respond?

(He laughs) This is very true, sometime back I was on holiday with my wife, some people did approach me to ask about them. My response is that those are not my wives. There is a difference between Zack and Eddy. This is what I make clear. When my kids are watching, they do refer to the character as ‘Zack’. My youngest child sometimes back referred to the character as ‘daddy’ but now she does know that that is Zack. It happens that people do forget that whatever is on TV is acting and there is real life and the two are very different.

Have you ever tried out commercial modeling? What brand did you work for?

I have done auditions for different advertisements. It becomes very hard because I’m told I am not a Kenyan and the advert will not reach the Kenyan market. However, I have done advertisements such as one with the Standard Chartered. I have also done voice adverts. When I see that I stand a chance I do go for the auditions.

What do you want to tell your audience and the people reading this?

Put God first and never give up. Do not only work hard but also work smart. Your chance will come!

There are ladies who have taken up their responsibility and kept the child they are expecting yet they are in school. Becoming a mother is such a beautiful thing as a child is a blessing. However, what of those who did not expect to have a child yet they have to come to terms with the situation?

Luckily for a friend of mine she had such a great support system and was able to deal with the situation and is raising the child right and still pursuing her education. For many ladies in campus upon getting a child, informing the father becomes a task let alone breaking the news to the parents. Unfortunately, for some the father to the child may bluntly reject the pregnancy. As a lady in such a situation, you learn to stand up strong as you have an added responsibility that you have to own up to all on your own.

Coming to terms with the reality hence accepting the situation as it is, is one of the most important things though very difficult , it helps one take care of herself and the bundle of joy she is carrying. It is no longer business as usual for the lady as she has to stand up for her child. This begins from the day she gets the information that she is pregnant. If it is the life of partying she will have to give up to ensure the safety of the baby, the late nights, she has to eat well and also go for her clinical check ups to ensure the child’s growth is progressing smoothly, she is not only a student but also a mother.

Stigma is there especially for a campus lady who is pregnant, the world can be mean at times . Going to classes may become a task but it depends with how one takes it, people will always have something to say, as the lady you no longer think of yourself but the baby as well. why do we not make things easier for our fellows, instead of bad mouthing or talking ill of the individual, be nice, be kind, say hi, it makes there days easier. To those individuals with the habit of staring, kindly do note that it is rude to stare.

Some parents kick their kids out, I have had of cases where the daughter is disowned by the parents. Carrying a baby in your womb for nine months is not easy, there are individuals who get varicose veins due to the weight of the pregnancy and many other complications that come with the pregnancy. When the baby starts to show it is even heavier to bear as walking becomes difficult for some the cravings are so intense yet for an upbeat comrade it is hard to afford some items. One is in their early twenties or even not yet twenty yet one has to wear maternity clothes, it is really psychologically nerve recking it is even scary for some to walk in public but stll one has to push on and face the challenges head strong cause the lady is strong. Talk of morning sickness! Change in appearance, taking suppliments for the childs well being, mood swings.

The process of being in labour is even more difficult but they bear it all for the reward is sweeter. Breastfeeding also comes with its own package of difficulties such as cracking of the nipples, hardening of the breasts, some have their hairline falling back due to some hormones produced during lactations. Yet the ladies choose to put their interest aside and fully care for the child.

Thought a sensitive issue but some shared of how their own parents pushed them to have abortions but they refused, for some it was not an option but it remains a ghost they have to deal with every day. It is difficult to be young yet pregnant, yet pregnancies are but a calling of nature for a woman. The discussion to keep the baby is usually a tough one to make, from my research I would advise anyone in such a situation to keep the child. With every challenge comes a great opportunity do not choose the easy way out rather face the situation and most definitely doors will open for you no matter how tough the season may be coz however hard the sun may burn eventually the clouds will open and there shall be rains.

When the child arrives and it seems scary at first the thought of what will the child eat, what will he or she wear, will I be able to raise him? May click your mind, luckily with time everything falls into place.

With time one gets to understand just what the baby needs and provide efficiently, however it doesn’t end there. With a child comes expenses. Some individuals who do not get support from their parents have to figure out a way to provide some may put their studies on hold, some may manage to provide for their child and still study.

Truth be told, these ladies who keep their kids and take full responsibility need to be respected. It ain’t easy for them and most definitely they have alot of emotions to deal with. They are forces to reckon with as they have found a new source of inspiration, they have a new reason to live. They have a different line of thinking all together, it is no longer just about them but their babies as well.

Let us learn to support one another, accord each individual the respect they deserve .So next time you walk across a lady who is to bring forth a lovely baby and the individual is still studying, be the mature person you are, smile and go about your own business, keep your opinion to yourself. Support everyone around you for so long as you are in a position to, it helps .

To all the strong ladies who are already mothers or expectant, thumbs up!!! for the strength you potray is most definitely incredible. Keep the child, for as ‘Sauti sol’and’Amos and Josh sing’ mtoto huja na sahani take.’ A child brings forth his own blessings.

Three years ago, c2k and kagwe Mungai dropped the hit song Kidero grass. Recently, they did it again when they released another enormous hit titled “don’t take too long.” We have a chat with him on this detailed interview.

Briefly tell us about yourself

Well c2k was born and raised in Mombasa and lived there for twenty-two years of his life. The environment Mombasa has taught me to take life slow, am born creative. In my career history, I used to work at coca cola as a marketing brand manager. I have always loved music production, videos and everything like that. I like travelling, building up the industry building up the people taking time to invest in people.

When did your passion for music begin?

Well my passion for music started when I was twelve years old in Mombasa. It all began in my cousin home studio. I used to visit him a lot when we were kids, one day he bought a keyboard and started making beats, since then that is when the interest popped up though I always listened to music since I was nine. When I found the opportunity to record that is when my passion for music began. It began when I was very young so I have been doing this for a while now.

Were your parents against it ?Did they support you?

Well my dad did not like the idea of becoming a musician because of the lifestyle it is purpoted to entail (involving drugs, alcohol the late night), he was not for that lifestyle. Mum loved my music, she knew I was talented and that I had something but at the same time her main concern was my lyrics, she always asked that; are you sure you can say that? Are you sure you can mention that person’s name? She was a little bit paranoid though at the back of the mind she couldn’t say no coz they knew pretty well that I had a talent and they could not stop it but they had the concerns.

You recently released a hit song featuring Kagwe Mungai (Don’t Take Too Long), can you tell us about it?

Don’t take too long was special because one thing about Kagwe and me is that we have great chemistry when we come to the studio, we understand each other, we know how to get a point across. I reemember when he composed the song, he simply came to the studio and I got along with him and proposed of something different for the next song.

What is the major challenge you faced when working on that song?

For me the major challenge was opening up, being real, and talking about what had actually transpired. For me that was the challenge because I have never done it before. It was a challenge and at the same time, it was exciting I actually put the truth in the track.

Should we expect more of that type of juicy songs or what is your plan?

Hahaha! Am just gonna say expect a lot from C2K. There gonna be a lot of music coming out a lot of features, a lot of productions so yea I guess you could see that more songs are gonna take too long coming soon but at the moment is just about building content. Yea I would say so.

Apart from being a musician what else do you do?

Well, I also do artist management where I try to build up and raise artist who are potential to get out there and also help manage a studio tsunami studios so that is what I do on the musical side, but besides that I am an entrepreneur I got some business that I do to keep myself busy . I will not disclose too much but yea it is all about the business you know.

What is your biggest plan this year?

My biggest plan is to release content with consistency because I have been quite for two years three years. I haven’t done much music my biggest plan is to get back that consistent level of music coming out just coming out and just having a momentum just building a momentum to build my career and besides that am working on a project coming together. Besides all that is just giving content, building a brand, and just showing people that Kenyan music can be international. We can do better.

If you had one message to you ex, what would it be?

(laughs) You can leave nobody gonna stop you (laughs), yeah go do you thing if you want to am always blessed all the year.

Share with us the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I have ever received is don’t compete with anybody, stay in your lane do your thing. If you do music for the right reason and you know you want to make an impact to make a difference then go at your own pace, go at your own level go at your own sound. The only competition you have is with the man in the mirror so either do not make an ego contest or am a bigger man than you can contest. Let us not make it a competition lets work together.

Final words?

My producer is Kenyatta, shout out Kanyeria. The studio we work at is tsunami studios, magic tempo is the label and just wanna shout out the people that helped me put this art together. And finally again, shout out to Kanyeria he is amazing he is a genius shout out my producer.

There is a dream and a wish. I would rather live a dream than a wish Martin Luther :I have a dream, Barrack Obama’s slogan “Yes we can.” This are all dreams, as dreams can came true and wishes do just remain wishes. I am sure you look back and are fascinated that you in actual sense did make it that far.

well, I do fill the same but I did realize that life is too short .Of course we hear this each day, truth be told there are four phases to life: 0-20}first phase 20-40} second phase adulthood/youth 40-60} adulthood 60-80} old age – this is basically the total to the human being life span of which one will experience the quota life crisis, the midlife crisis; So what is left of the rest?

Am thinking this is something we need to tackle in phases. But first let me give you the overview. There is no particular age to which one ought to have achieved something .If one keeps to the societal pressure then most definitely one gets overwhelmed by twenty one , ought to be a straightA student, by thirty be married, by forty have to stoop to what the society demands? Whatever the case you will always have a flaw.
The judgmental mindset will always be there. It is for you to overlook it. Do things your way. Do what makes you happy, satisfied life is better than successful life because others measure our success. However, our satisfaction is measured by our own soul, mind and heart.

It is not okay to settle less or be mediocre but only you knows what you want for yourself, I have friends who are already married at twenty and are very happy and at the same time I have friends who are already investing and those at their forties and have no plans to get married .As I always put it to each their own .

Living the reality is heard but the moment you learn to separate yourself from their expectation then you learn to truly establish the you .You aren’t in in competition with no one just because a friend is getting way ahead in life ; that’s them wish them well , you have a different life to lead.

Embrace your personality :enjoy the good food, good health , good music, nice drinks basically the best that life has to offer, do not get too caught up in trying to be who you are not in chasing dreams which only give you headaches and sleepless nights. Go for what makes the you happy no matter what phase of life you are at do not beat yourself up with what the society expects, go with your own pace and you will find yourself prospering. Take it a day at a time. Chase your own dream not someone else’s expectations of you .Living your own life. Mind your own business and you will find that life treats you to great surprises.
Be your own person, live your own dreams.

Time waits for no man.Talk of money, time, emotions, our physic is being drained, individuals we let in our lives some are user’s. Invariably there to feed off and benefit from us. Do not get me wrong, there is nothing better than giving, but we cannot give blindly. If is not okay to give but do not give to a point that you lack.

I have been in position where I have questioned whether I was giving too much then it hit me the mere fact that I was questioning my giving goes to show that the receiver was not worth it. When you find that you are feeling drained then the friendship is a toxic one and it is time to walk away.

Time is of the essence and there is no need whatsoever to keep yourself stuck with individuals who want all of your time but can give you zero of their time ,individuals who when you need them are nowhere to be found but when they need you, you have to stop all that you are doing .Relationships should be a giving and taking basis.

Talk of money, have you ever found yourself get someone gifts but if you look through you closet there is nothing that they have ever gotten you ?you should give without receiving but at the same time do not remain blind to reality. Do remember that a relationship is a form of investment, and if at all you make wise investments you will reap off beautifully. I am not suggesting that one has to get you a fortune for them to be considered as good friends but if at all an individual cannot even spend a shilling on you then kindly they are not worth it.

Why strain your emotions waiting on someone call yet they can never call you, why strain yourself going to knock at someone door yet they are not ever there? Why waste your time cracking jocks with someone who can never lend an ear to your problems? Someone who can never ask how you are fairing.

Do remember that a relationship is a form of investment, and if at all you make wise investments you will reap off beautifully.

A friend in need is a friend in deed, and as Felix Oduor the famous “Jalango” once said “Do not call people your friends, do not call people your best friends ,do not call people your neighbors ,do not call people your colleagues let your hard times introduce your true friends ,introduce your neighbors, introduce your true colleagues “
Save your time, money, emotions by keeping the truest around you. Weigh the odds and keep the trust.

When I think of talent, I think of Nikita Kering, Nadia Mukami, Ethic, Amina, the list is endless. The music industry is growing by the day and I for one love where it is headed.

If any of you did watch the Kalasha awards last year or pulse award then you would really appreciate these musicians, the Kenyan film industry, and the Kenyan raw talent. Tokodi Pascal put it across that we need to support the Kenya film industry and I for once second him.You hear and individual claim that he or she doesn’t do Kenyan music. “To each their own,” but do justice to yourself and love what is yours, support what is yours, back up what is yours as at the end of the day you will also need someone to back you up one day. Some claim there is no content but have you taken time to listen to the wisdom of “King Kaka” have you taken time to download an album by Nyashinski, have you taken time to attend a concert by Suati Sol.

Instead of categorizing each of them in a pool or criticizing the whole day. Find reason to listen to it, if you look hard enough you will see the good but if you focus on the bad definitely the speck will be magnified.

If you are looking for a blend of old and new go for Juakali, Nameless, Hart the band you will definitely find it. The number of Kenyan artists is on the rise, different genres but absolute talent, love their songs, give them your support and most definitely they will grow. They will be in a position to shout better films and definitely release higher quality music. Let us buy Kenya, sell Kenya.

Look for a film to watch, plan B is a great suggestion I would give. Increase the number of Kenyan music in your playlist and most definitely we will grow.

There are those days you walk into a store and realize you have spent each coin you had down to the last cent especially those days that you are super happy. I heard someone say do not ever spend nor make a financial decision when happy or super sad this could be tyranny which simply brings chaos in your life.

Take a case scenario when one has just had his pay cheque or ‘won a lottery’. This is the point at which one has so many ideas, one wants to do everything and anything for oneself. Now sit down and think about it, there is so much money we waste for not having a plan.

Impulse will always be there, we are only human, we desire what we see and for sure we definitely do go for it but, in the event that we were prepared to handle such a situation then we would save ourselves a fortune. Most definitely there are those of us, when young had piggy banks for the rest of us metallic home banks did the trick. And question is why not bring them back? Thing is yes, at this point in time we all own a bank account or rather are making plans to own one. Planning to not only be in a position where we are cashing out money but also cashing in money smartly is essential.

Here is a general sketch out of the financial plan. Yes, we might be young with very little or no source of income whatsoever, but if you were to set aside a hundred shilling from your daily spending, cash it into a metallic bank, for each day for the next three hundred and sixty five days in a year, then by the end of the year you would actually have thirty six thousand five hundred. Okay; what if your budget is too tight? Good question, then why not save twenty-shilling coin, trust you me, by the end of six months you will have to get a larger metallic home bank. By the end of a year, you will be talking of seven thousand three hundred in your account.

This is money you can easily use to satisfy your short term goals, to go to Mombasa and back, you could even just use the standard gauge railway(SGR) at the VIP section then back if you are a fan of travelling, what if you aim to go to Rwanda, take a bus to enjoy the road trip and back; then increase the 100-200.Basically, start small in terms of savings and eventually you will hit it big.

Do put in mind if you cannot save the little you have, then even if you get much you will most definitely not even be able to use it efficiently. Let’s make plans, follow the financial goals and spare the dollar, in the long run we will be the ones to enjoy it. I do know at times some things are easier said than done but, those eventually done despite the weight are the sweetest.

There is nothing sweeter than making use of money specifically set aside for the particular goal. Go get yourself a metallic home bank, you will be the one smiling when you feel the weight. Repetitive actions build habits. Start saving, it could become a habit.

Behind those who take gold, silver, bronze are those who never made it to the top. Beside those who made it to campus is a lot that never made it to any institution. Behind every football bet won is another lost.

Failure is one of the painful parts of life. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don’t. The feeling of disappointments engulfs one. The thought of letting one’s team down is devastating. Failing to score that goal, failing to get that extra point heartbreaking. How does one deal with this pain, how does one overcome the shame, how does one overcome failure?

Self-compassion is one of the most important traits, being able to sympathize with oneself. Attaching more value to oneself and understanding that beside the win, beside the victory, beside the loss is a beautiful human being who deserves love and value.

Getting over failure is not easy. As failure comes with harsh consequences such as loss of funding. Being dropped out of the team, being unable to proceed to the next level, having to retake a paper and the likes. However, recognizing that one is experiencing emotional difficulty is very important. After acknowledging that you are experiencing the pain, appreciate that others are also experiencing it.

Express understanding, kindness and concern over for oneself. Don’t concern yourself with the mistakes that have occurred for what has happened, has happened and cannot be changed, learn to deal with it through either writing, meditation, exercising. Be kind to yourself.
This will help you to overcome failure and set back. When you feel as if life is not fair to you, overcome the thought with self-kindness as these things happen. There will be a brighter tomorrow.
