Born of a typical or let’s say an original tropical African bloodline, my level of scepticism with coffee was just over the roof and to make it all arid in the mountain top,it was white coffee but as I said, am all African which comes with the flexibility to try out new stuff. The evening was not as smooth, or rather, those books with the most lovely covers could have the most boring context, so I thought.

He wasn’t just the guy to run a smooth talk , the consistency of our narrative was just similar to a Kenyan road, bumpy and rough even at 20km/hr .This dude looks all sharp but doesn’t know anything that happens in the social world, he’s not been to events leave alone he’s just a beer guy , weird how someone would ignore a scotch leave alone a gin or is he just figuring out the punch line yet?

At a moment I thought that maybe I ain’t attractive enough , or is this guy just not straight ? All this suspense left me wondering just what the fuck! it’s an evening and it’s chilly plus this is coffee, well if the rumours I hear about this stuff is real.

” Um hmm,it’s getting cold out here,do you mind if we get in? “,he said and I was like, finally, that wasn’t hard enough after all, well but that was the one sentence speech in my brain, not yet out of my vocal chords. The inside of the house was another moment of a real life fantasy, the art , the design of the furniture, the wine display and hear this , the jazz beats all the way from the 80s , at this moment I take my words back , well this guy has been to events, just that it’s those infamous fundraisers I normally see in a Netflix movie probably with Beverley hills graphics, the art with the signature of big galaries that made me realise that I love art and the collection of original jazz music all the way from upstate New York brought in the vibe of the Victoria falls so original and not corrupted.

“This is epic”, I said to him.”what specifically ? “, he asked. I realized that I had no correct harmony of words to answer this man, so I quickly throw a fast glance to the interior once more, this time with the watchful eyes of a hungry canine. ” hey , you alright?” , he asked again, this time I just had to embrace my simplicity and say ” Am just blown with all this ” , as I spread my hand pointing on the overall interior. ” Everything you see has a story ” , he said as he sat down after changing the jazz track. We finally sat down and this was it , he finally opened his mouth , not to sip the coffee but to talk . The room lit with dimly coloured lights and the marble ceiling with enticing confectionery wafts , I now knew why people take coffee after all , its a catalyst to some big talk , a hack to skip the small talk.

Clear sky with faint shades of dark sketches,a dimly coloured horizon reflecting the disappearing sun and strong humid winds ushering the spectacle inception of the evening, 27th October 2018. Seated on the porch adjacent to the backyard was a young man, of black complexion and an alpha vibe reflected by his masculinity; probably in his mid twenties , holding a black mug of coffee in his right hand.

Judging from his deep narrowed eyes staring at the floral garnish of the alpine lilies and primroses which blanket the better part of the backyard ; a mixture that brought about a soothing panorama of scents and colours, making the late evening hours worthwhile inspite of the dominance of chilly humid winds. The young champ was in deepest of thoughts, perhaps roaming in the streets of another civilisation.

The mug of coffee was as if affixed to his arms,no noticeable movements just the foggy smoky breath from his nostrils .A sudden strike of empathy and curiosity prompted me to take some few steps closer to him and as a gesture of etiquette try to give him audience,be the companion he seems not to have , a listener, a comforter. I gasped to myself. In a few moments , I was at arms length with him , close enough to smell the classy scent of his cologne . His deep breaths softly struck my arms as I stretched out to greet him .

“Hi,am Mwikali”, I said. “Iansmith ” , he replied. ” Nice to meet you ” , he added as he stretched his arm to greet me back. ” Can I help you ? ” he quickly asked and without hesitation, I replied to him , ” yeah , I ld love some company for the chilly evening. Do you mind if I seat with you ? “. He seemed surprised and with his unique accent, he accepted my request. Quickly , he stood to offer me his seat and held my hand gently as he directed me to get on the seat, his other hand holding the coffee mug .” Can I offer you something to drink, coffee, juice or a beer ? ” , he confidently asked.

At this moment and the sequence of events, I was confused, partly because I didn’t expect the chivalrous treatment from him and his appearance just happened to rock my tiny world. I felt goosebumps,a lightning strike in my stomach, I was falling in love…….at this point I clearly knew the meaning of love at first sight.

“Hello”, he called again,as I was already lost in a place where the only way to describe is by soft genuine smiles. I quickly nodded as I agreed to a cup of coffee courtesy of his request.

Its been quite a trying cross period
of immense heartache and disappointment. Truth is, I didn’t see either coming, if anything, I thought it was my eureka of the life of love , unconditional love.

The journey as I try to flashback has been a sketchy combination of minimal uproars and unbearably steep declines , all from this one person who means what I hear people refer to as ” the universe”, only that this time , she was my universe. It probably got colonised and probably my weaponry wasn’t sufficient, my arsenal wasn’t big enough. It’s okay to lose , only that I’m not wired to accept defeat.

So I try flowers, roses, tulips and even the rare orchids. I must admit, it was a great feeling to see the girly smile on her face, leave alone the great moments I took her out for coffee dates. Her favourite was the cocktail date at the only 4 star hotel of Embu, just 2 kilometres from the strolling metropolis , Izaac Walton inn.

Finally, I decide to let her go , it was obvious that i wasn’t her type. Being a corporate guy whose life revolves around numbers and statistics, it was hard for me to be the guy she wanted. I mean, I don’t have dreadlocks, tattoos and don’t dress in those “Odi” outfits, she just couldn’t click with me.

It was hard to move on , so I decide to start a company. I needed something to take away the concentration. And following this break up, INDEX GROUP was born, a financial consultancy firm.

Things kick started quite quickly, I just had to move on and this was my only plan. In a month’s time, I had done too much that my efforts got the attention of one of the great C.E.O of a well renown company. In two months my firm was registered and had two clients, big clients.

Surprisingly, I had forgotten all about her , my plan had worked. Now I look the part , Italian outfits, swiss cologne and did I mention , a sleek BMW X6 comfortably stands in my parking lot at the apartment I bought in westlands area , Nairobi.
She obviously saw my posts and since we share common friends who , you know how ladies talk , told her all about me , and guess what , she wants me now . Many attempts to reach out but I didn’t give a flying fuck.

In my line of expertise I met this fine city chick who runs her company as well and so far , we living the good life.

Heartbreaks are normal, it’s how you respond that counts . To all the victims out there , follow your instincts or as the wise men said , ” Easy choices , Hard life . Hard choices , Easy life “.
