THE MOST UNIQUE DUO IN THE KENYAN MUSIC SCENE

Linda, Joanne and Ithan (the songbirds behind the song COOCOO) beget what can only be described as a spellbinding authenticity. The Lyrical Vybe (Joanne $ Linda) who met way back while still in highschool have learned and mastered the art of making you fall in love with the lyrical flow and spiced up content of their songs. They share their journey with us.

Briefly tell us about yourself

Lyrical Vybe is a duo that is comprised of two Christian artists that do urban music revolving around real life and inspiration.

How did you meet ?

We met back in high school though we didn’t start our musical journey back then. We came together after school and decided to start a singing group.

What is the story behind your name lyrical vybe?

We wanted a name that suggested that the kind of aura/ vibe we aspire to spread anywhere we go is Lyrical and musical. An aura that is happy, inspirational, Godly, hopeful etc.

Which song gave you the hardest time to write?

The song titled Freedom. Freedom is a very dicey topic because the term freedom carries the assumption that one is free to do whatever they want to do which is not the case. Packaging it in a way that’s understandable and not misleading was quite a task.

Between the two of you who gets hit on by dudes the most?

We’ve had this argument with Linda before because she says that I get hit on by guys and I strongly disagree. But this doesn’t really matter to us because right now we have bigger things to focus on. We’re not really keen on that.

Apart from music, what else do you do?

We’re entrepreneurs – we co-own a business called ‘viondos with everything nice’. Linda is also learning a few things or two about music production.

Among your songs, which one is your favourite?

We love Coocoo because the fusion of hiphop and afro sound provides a unique and interesting sound. The writing process was also a very interesting one because we’ve never written a love song in that way.

What should your fans expect from you this year?

We’ll release at least three singles which will accumulate to an ep. We’ll also release a video and we’ll have our own first gig ever on December this year just so our fans can have a live experience of our content.

If you had one message to kenyan Djs and Radio station, what would it be?

We feel that it is extremely fundamental for all stakeholders to support each other this including the musicians, media personalities and deejays. Kenyan radio stations and deejays alike should give all artists equal opportunities. Let it not be about how influential the artist is but about the music and talent. In short please play Kenyan music.

Advice to anyone out there with passion in doing music

Never give up on your dreams. As long as they are in line with God’s will push until it bears fruit. We’ve come a long way and we’re still here by God’s grace so keep on keeping on.
