For many of Gen Zs, social media is both a lifeline and a landmine. It’s where we connect, express, and escape and also where anxiety, comparison, and loneliness quietly take root. The same platforms that give us a voice can also drown it out with unrealistic standards, misinformation, and the pressure to always be “on.”

Growing up online means our self-worth is often entangled with likes, comments, and curated images. We scroll through highlight reels, comparing our behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s best moments. This constant exposure can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Studies have shown that excessive social media use is linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety among young people.

In response to these challenges, many of us are turning to technology for support. AI-powered chatbots and virtual therapy apps offer immediate, judgment-free spaces to vent and seek advice. They’re accessible anytime, which is crucial when traditional mental health resources are out of reach. Some users find comfort in these digital companions, feeling heard and understood without fear of stigma.

However, relying solely on AI for mental health support has its drawbacks. While these tools can provide temporary relief, they lack the empathy and nuanced understanding that human therapists offer. There have been concerns about the potential for AI to misinterpret or inadequately address complex emotional issues. It’s important to recognize that while technology can be a helpful supplement, it shouldn’t replace professional care.

Navigating mental health in the digital age requires a balanced approach. We need to be mindful of our online habits, curate our feeds to include positive influences, and set boundaries to protect our well-being. Engaging in open conversations about mental health, both online and offline, can help reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help.

Ultimately, our generation is redefining how we approach mental health. It’s okay to seek help, to take breaks, and to prioritize our mental well-being. In doing so, we not only help ourselves but also pave the way for a more understanding and compassionate society.

On a sunny morning in Nakuru, the We Are One Nakuru team assembled in town, buzzing with anticipation for a day of connection, laughter, and healing. We Are One, founded by Cruz Elton and coordinated locally by Christus, is an organization dedicated to supporting young individuals navigating mental health challenges by creating safe, joyful spaces for interaction and growth

The Journey Begins

Our adventure commenced as we boarded a matatu from Nakuru town, heading towards the historic Lord Egerton Castle. The journey was filled with excitement and chatter, setting the tone for the day ahead. Upon arrival, we waited for fellow participants who traveled by personal cars, and soon, our group was complete. After a brief wait for our event organizer, we paid the entrance fee and stepped into the castle grounds, ready to explore.

Exploring the Castle

The majestic Lord Egerton Castle, with its 52 rooms and rich history, provided a captivating backdrop for our day. We embarked on a tour, marveling at the art gallery and the castle’s intricate architecture. The castle, built between 1938 and 1954 by Lord Maurice Egerton, stands as a testament to unrequited love and has since become a popular site for visitors seeking both history and tranquility. We took numerous photos, capturing memories against the stunning scenery.

Games and Bonding

Post-tour, we gathered for introductions, sharing our names and a bit about ourselves, fostering a sense of community. The energy shifted to playful competition as we organized a boys-versus-girls race, with the girls emerging victorious amidst cheers and laughter. We then engaged in the “extender” game, stretching our creativity and physical limits.

Forming a circle, we played “Obingo” and “Peekaboo,” games that involved singing, pausing, and attempting to make the chosen person laugh without moving. These activities not only entertained but also strengthened our bonds, highlighting the therapeutic power of shared joy.

Sharing and Celebrating

After the games, we sat down to enjoy snacks and a beautifully decorated cake, symbolizing our shared journey and achievements. This moment of relaxation allowed for deeper conversations, where participants opened up about their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, reinforcing the supportive environment that We Are One strives to create.

Capturing the Moment

As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the castle grounds, we seized the opportunity to take group photos, both outside and within the castle. The picturesque setting provided the perfect backdrop for our memories. Spontaneous dancing ensued, with music and laughter filling the air, encapsulating the day’s spirit.

Reflecting on the Experience

As the day concluded, we gathered our belongings and prepared to return home, hearts full and spirits uplifted. The event, meticulously organized by Christus under the guidance of Cruz Dela, was more than just a day out; it was a celebration of resilience, community, and the joy found in shared experiences.

We Are One continues to provide invaluable support to young individuals, reminding us all of the importance of connection, understanding and taking time to simply enjoy.

Before I truly knew myself, I knew him. At nineteen, I met a man who swept me into a whirlwind of emotions I wasn’t prepared for. I was young, innocent, and full of hope. He was a few years older – a millennial with confidence and experience I admired. Together, we shared moments filled with joy, adventure, and passion.

We traveled to new places, capturing memories with countless pictures that still bring a smile to my face. There were spontaneous road trips, late-night talks under starry skies, and the thrill of discovering each other’s worlds. The intimacy was intense and confusing—new for me, exciting and raw. I was still innocent in many ways, learning to navigate love and desire all at once.

Our relationship was filled with laughter and warmth. He taught me to take risks, to live in the moment. I let my guard down, trusting him fully, believing this was the start of something lasting. Those good times felt endless, and for a while, it was pure happiness.

But amidst the laughter and fun, heartbreak quietly crept in. When he stopped calling, I was left wondering what went wrong. I cried over unanswered messages and empty promises. The weight of the pain made me lose myself. I lost weight, felt depressed, and struggled with loneliness. Months passed with me trying to heal while he moved on easily, never once giving me a second chance. I learned he had fallen for someone else, and that realization crushed me.

The age difference, though just a few years, was a barrier. He was a millennial who seemed okay with fleeting love, while I, a Gen Z, wanted something deeper but was still learning how to love myself. That gap made the heartbreak harder to understand and accept.

Still, I cherish those memories; the adventures, the laughter, the innocent moments where I believed in us. Yes, I was naive. Yes, I was broken. But I also learned what it means to love and lose.

Now, I’m healing and growing. I know heartbreak doesn’t define me. I’m ready to write the next chapter—stronger, wiser, and ready to love again on my own terms.
