Remotasks Shuts Down Operations in Kenya

In a surprising turn of events, the widely used online gig-economy platform Remotasks has ceased its operations in Kenya. Known for providing opportunities for individuals to earn money through completing various online tasks such as image and video labelling, the platform has abruptly halted its services in the region, displaying an error message to local users attempting to access it.

The reason behind this sudden shutdown remains undisclosed, leaving many users puzzled and without alternative income sources.

Back in 2021, Remotasks had actively encouraged Kenyans to take advantage of remote work opportunities through their platform, emphasizing the chance to contribute to the advancement of AI technology while earning money from the comfort of their homes. However, the recent unavailability of the platform contradicts its previous outreach efforts in the region.

Some Remotasks account holders on social media reported receiving emails last week informing them the platform is no longer accessible in the region.

“We are reaching out with an important announcement regarding Remotasks operations in your location. We are discontinuing operations in your current location effective March 8, 2024,” the email reads per several screenshots shared online.

“As part of this change, you have been off-boarded from your current project. You will receive payments associated with your work completed via the payment account set up on your profile.”
