Rwanda has become the first country in Africa to host a public flight of a self-flying electric air taxi, marking a new chapter in the continent’s aviation history.

At the Aviation Africa 2025 Summit in Kigali, officials unveiled the EH216-S electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), developed by Chinese company EHang. The demonstration, carried out in partnership with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), showcased the aircraft’s ability to fly autonomously without a pilot onboard.

The two-seater EH216-S is fully electric and designed for short-range urban flights. With its vertical take-off and landing capability, it requires no runway and can carry up to 220 kilograms, according to the manufacturer. Advocates say such aircraft could help ease urban congestion, cut emissions, and offer new options for connecting hard-to-reach areas.

For Rwanda, the debut underscores its ambition to position itself as a hub for advanced air mobility. The country has already earned global attention for pioneering drone delivery of medical supplies through Zipline, which has been operating since 2016. Officials say the new step into air taxis builds on that reputation for innovation.

However, the showcase does not yet translate into commercial service. Regulatory approvals, safety standards, and infrastructure requirements remain to be addressed before the technology can be deployed for passengers. Rwanda’s Civil Aviation Authority is expected to develop a framework to guide future operations.

Industry analysts note that while eVTOL aircraft are still in early stages worldwide, Rwanda’s demonstration places Kigali among the first cities globally to publicly test such technology. If successful, it could provide a model for other African nations exploring advanced mobility solutions.

For many of Gen Zs, social media is both a lifeline and a landmine. It’s where we connect, express, and escape and also where anxiety, comparison, and loneliness quietly take root. The same platforms that give us a voice can also drown it out with unrealistic standards, misinformation, and the pressure to always be “on.”

Growing up online means our self-worth is often entangled with likes, comments, and curated images. We scroll through highlight reels, comparing our behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s best moments. This constant exposure can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Studies have shown that excessive social media use is linked to increased rates of depression and anxiety among young people.

In response to these challenges, many of us are turning to technology for support. AI-powered chatbots and virtual therapy apps offer immediate, judgment-free spaces to vent and seek advice. They’re accessible anytime, which is crucial when traditional mental health resources are out of reach. Some users find comfort in these digital companions, feeling heard and understood without fear of stigma.

However, relying solely on AI for mental health support has its drawbacks. While these tools can provide temporary relief, they lack the empathy and nuanced understanding that human therapists offer. There have been concerns about the potential for AI to misinterpret or inadequately address complex emotional issues. It’s important to recognize that while technology can be a helpful supplement, it shouldn’t replace professional care.

Navigating mental health in the digital age requires a balanced approach. We need to be mindful of our online habits, curate our feeds to include positive influences, and set boundaries to protect our well-being. Engaging in open conversations about mental health, both online and offline, can help reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help.

Ultimately, our generation is redefining how we approach mental health. It’s okay to seek help, to take breaks, and to prioritize our mental well-being. In doing so, we not only help ourselves but also pave the way for a more understanding and compassionate society.

2025 will absolutely change digital marketing as we know it. Agile brands have already jumped on the bandwagon of what’s to come whilst some are still adapting to the new way of doing things.

I’m talking AI, Social SEO, shoppable videos among other trends that I will point out in this think-piece.

Times are changing, for real. And it’s only best for businesses to move with the changing times lest they lose out on potential sales, clients or worse case scenario fold and go home.

Over the years we have seen companies that were reluctant to adapt to new technologies and ended up being replaced by those that read the room and moved with the programme. Kodak, Posta and Nokia are just but a few examples of such.

Looking at 2025 digital projection, there’s great potential for companies to bring out their A-game and be ahead of competitors.

So what are some of these trends?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI has become part of us by now, there’s only need to leverage it to our advantage – in the best way possible. Brands have previously used AI to churn out captions, web articles and even ad copies.

But that might need a shift of gear a little bit. Audiences can now detect an AI generated content. And get irked while at it. Truth is, majority of your audience still value human content – content that has life and human touch.

Ideally, you should combine both your creativity and AI (especially for brainstorming ideas) when creating content for your audiences. Relying fully on AI will cost you numbers both on social media and search engines and authenticity.

User Generated Content (UGC)
The past years we have seen brands opting to use influencers and content creators to advertise their products online.

This is going to even get bigger and better (cliché), both for brands and aspiring content creators. With the current algorithm, the number of views on your TikTok or Instagram Reels is not determined by the number of followers, rather by how people interact with the content.

This calls for content creators and marketers to be creative enough to attract as many eye balls as possible. Your content only needs that one video that will grab attention and the whole ecosystem changes.

Storytelling plays a major role in this. How best, relatable and unique your content is will separate you from the crowd.

There are two tips to have in mind when you choose to bank on UGC
– Avoid being salesy – entertain first, sell later (majority of social media users are there for leisure)
– When selling directly, especially on TikTok, prioritise putting the price and location on your caption, and make the video as short as possible (save people’s time).

Short Form Videos
Of course, people’s attention span is deteriorating day by day. The shorter the video, high chances you’ll get more interactions on it. You’ve possibly come across comments such as, “ongea haraka (speak faster)” or if it’s in long articles like this one, comments will be like “summarise”.

And such is the new way of life.

TikTok, Instagram/Facebook Reel, YouTube shorts need not to be more than a minute. Put across your message faster, clearly and directly to the point.

Omnichannel
Omnichannel calls for diversification of your target audience. You have possibly been missing out on leads, clients, opportunities or even partnerships because you have relied on only one platform.

Most new brands/businesses that are coming up are opting for TikTok and Instagram and leaving out Facebook, X etc.

There are many excuses to this such as target market or their brand’s identity strategy. For instance, if you’re targeting young people (let’s say Gen Z), you’ll most likely go where they are – like TikTok and IG. Same case if your content is primarily videos; some platforms don’t do well with video content.

Whilst that is a good strategy for audience segmentation, it’s a safe bet to cross-share your content all across the platforms. Only thing you might need to do now is content repurposing – of course what you post on LinkedIn isn’t exactly what you’ll post on X, you might need to tweak it to fit the different audiences while still retaining its actual message.

Social Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

If your brand is targeting the new generation of social media user, you most likely want to optimise your social media caption just as much as you optimise your web content for search engines.

TikTok, for instance, has become a search engine on itself. And this is going to be more prevalent as more content is being produced day by day. Just like X where you’d easily search for what’s trending and get the content without a sweat, you can easily search for “Fridge for sale in Nairobi” on TikTok and get exactly what you want.

What that means for brand is, there’s now the need to craft your caption to make it easy for anyone looking for your product or service to find you. This was previously made possible with hashtags, but those days are coming to an end.

Partying shot
There are numerous trends that will come along as we journey on. These are some of those that will shift the paradigm and the whole digital marketing ecosystem.

Even so, traditional techniques like using keywords for SEO, hashtags on posts and long-form articles are still applicable for some brands.

However, that is not a cue to remain behind as your competitors change lanes, it’s a wake up call to add these tactics in your arsenal.

YouTube sensation Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, has once again captured global attention with a bold and viral statement. On January 13, 2025, he announced on X (formerly Twitter) his intention to buy TikTok to prevent it from being banned in the United States.

Why it matters:
Popular YouTuber and one of the richest content creators, MrBeast, has sparked conversations with his bold statement about potentially buying TikTok. While there’s no official auction or confirmation of TikTok’s sale, the app’s uncertain status in the U.S. has ignited widespread speculation.

The big picture:

  • TikTok faces a potential ban in the U.S. by January 19, following Congress passing a “divest-or-ban” legislature due to alleged national security concerns over its Chinese ownership.
  • With an estimated 170 million U.S. users, TikTok’s fate has become a topic of intense debate, with many speculating about potential buyers.

Driving the news:

  • MrBeast made waves with a social media post stating, “Okay fine, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned.”
  • This comment adds to the ongoing buzz about who could step in to acquire the app, with rumors previously linking names like Elon Musk. However, TikTok representatives have dismissed many such reports as “pure fiction.”

Zoom out:
The TikTok controversy stems from U.S. concerns about the app’s Chinese ownership under ByteDance. The government has pushed for a sale or a ban, citing national security risks.

What we’re watching:

  • As the January 19 deadline approaches, TikTok’s next steps remain unclear. In the meantime, figures like MrBeast and Elon Musk continue to fuel the conversation about the platform’s future.

The post Why Some Apps Are Not Available in Certain Countries appeared first on .

]]>
Have you ever tried downloading an application from Google Play Store then it gives you a warning saying “this item is not available in your country”?

There are a number of reasons as to why you could be seeing that message. While uploading Application to play store, developers have an option to select list of countries where the Application can be visible in play store.

They test apps in smaller markets so they can work out the things such as bugs, usability issues, edge cases, and so forth.

Let’s break down some of this reasons, shall we?

Testing

It’s quite typical for developers to trial their apps in smaller markets or regions before rolling out a fully stable version worldwide. This testing process helps uncover usability glitches, bugs, and any other issues with their products. Therefore, if you find an app unavailable in your country, chances are it’s undergoing testing.

Developer’s goal

When software developers create an app, they typically have a clear objective and a specific audience in mind.  When they upload their app to the app store, they  have the option to select the country or countries in which they wish to launch it.

Various factors such as language disparities, market potential, current trends, lifestyle preferences, and localization considerations influence their decisions when making the app available in select countries.

Legal barriers

Some countries have legal regulations for some apps because there may be some sort of laws that prohibits or limits the activities of a company or an app in your country.

Licensing and copyright issues

Some apps may have music, images, or other copyrighted content that is only licensed for use in certain countries. This can prevent the app from being available in other regions.

Pricing Challenges

International pricing could also be a challenge for some developers and end up making them unable to charge for subscriptions or in-app purchases in your region.

App store policies

App store policies and guidelines set by platform providers like Apple’s App Store or Google Play Store also influence app availability. Developers must adhere to these policies, which may include restrictions on certain types of content or compliance requirements for specific markets. Failure to meet these guidelines could result in the app being unavailable in certain regions.

X is eliminating the ability for Premium users to hide their blue checkmarks, according to a notification received by multiple users on Thursday.

Just like a lot of decisions taken by X, there is no definite timeline as to when the hide your checkmark feature will go away.

Once a status symbol, the blue check lost some of its luster after X shifted to a paid verification system under Elon Musk’s ownership. A blue check then just became an indicator that the account holder paid for a Premium subscription. The feature was also abused by scammers and online impersonators, and some blue checks became the target of online harassment or mass blocking. X eventually rolled out the blue check to accounts with more than a million followers, covering most living celebrities (and some dead) as well as public figures.

The company recently eliminated the segment detailing the procedure for concealing the checkmark feature from the X Premium support page prior to dispatching notifications to users. This functionality was exclusive to subscribers in the premium tier, not accessible to those in the basic tier.

“As a Premium or Premium+ subscriber, you can choose to hide your checkmark on your account. The checkmark will be hidden on your profile and posts. The checkmark may still appear in some places, and some features could still reveal that you have an active subscription,” the description read.

The change comes shortly after X unexpectedly began adding blue checks to the accounts of “influential” users with at least 2,500 followers who pay for a premium subscription. While Elon Musk suggested that change was meant to be a perk, some of his critics — including formerly verified users — were less than pleased with the blue badge appearing on their accounts, lest others suspect them of actually paying for a subscription.

The post Kenyan Startup Introduces AI-Driven Solution to Combat Illegal Logging, Wildfires appeared first on .

]]>
Artificial Intelligence has invaded almost all industries and is proving to make work efficient in everything it touches. Environmental sustainability, climate action, and conservation as a whole are also not left behind in this bandwagon.

In an effort to reduce illegal logging and charcoal burning, Joseph Nguthiru and Sam Okemwa have come up with a solution that harnesses the power of Artificial Intelligence to protect the forest.

Through their innovation branded M-Situ, the two envision creating a sustainable and greener future.

How M-Situ works

The climate tech startup leverages AI as an early warning system for illegal logging, wildfires, and charcoal burning. Their pilot execution is currently being undertaken in Ngong Forest and has proven to be the future of forest conservation.

“Africa has lost 30% of its indigenous tree cover due to activities such as illegal logging and charcoal burning. That’s why we have a solution that integrates so well with nature,” Nguthiru says.

The innovation gadget has a solar panel that generates power from the sun to charge the whole device. Attached to it is a charge controller and battery to ensure the sensor box is active all through.

The sensor box contains all the sensors that are trained through machine learning to detect any kind of threats in the forest.

“We have trained the sensors to detect noises such as that of a power saw so that we can know if a tree is being cut in the forest,” the climate action advocate asserts.

He also points out that the device is also trained to detect threats such as wildfires and various kinds of gases.

In a situation where a threat is sensed, the signal is sent to Kenya Forest Service ranger’s phone as a text message to alert them of the impending danger.

The whole process is also integrated on a web panel where forest rangers can log in and visualize the data received by the sensors. It also gives the coverage inform of a map that shows the location of the sensors and where the threats are detected such as noise levels together with a percentage probability.

Nguthiru affirms that the innovation will help forest rangers to act faster on threats that are facing our forests.

Background on logging in Kenya

The government has been putting effort into regulating logging activities through policies such as the Kenya Forest Conservation and Management Act, 2016. The Act governs logging and forest management by establishing a framework encompassing guiding procedures for obtaining logging licenses, designates areas for logging and conservation. It emphasizes the importance of conducting logging sustainably.

There have, however, been controversies surrounding illegal logging with various solutions being suggested.

Back in 2018, the Task Force on Forest Resources Management and Logging Activities recommended a ban. It was after a report stated that illegal logging of indigenous trees was a major threat to forests.

In June 2023, President William Ruto’s decision to lift the six-year logging ban sparked controversy, particularly among environmentalists who vehemently opposed the move.

Responding to concerns raised, the Law Society of Kenya took legal action, filing a case arguing that there had been insufficient public consultation prior to the ban being lifted. Consequently, the Environment and Land Court responded to the public outcry by issuing temporary orders to suspend the initial directive, effectively reinstating the logging ban.

YouTube has started rolling out a disclosure tool for  creators to self-label when their videos contain AI-generated or synthetic material.

The checkbox appears in the uploading and posting process, and creators are required to disclose “altered or synthetic” content that seems realistic. That includes things like making a real person say or do something they didn’t; altering footage of real events and places; or showing a “realistic-looking scene” that didn’t actually happen. Some examples YouTube offers are showing a fake tornado moving toward a real town or using deepfake voices to have a real person narrate a video.

However, creators don’t need to use the tool to disclose generative AI use for productivity purposes, such as script generation or generating content ideas, or when the synthetic media is unrealistic and/or the changes are inconsequential.

These labels will appear in the video descriptions and sometimes on the videos themselves for videos focused on sensitive topics like health, news, elections, or finance. YouTube will also automatically add labels when creators don’t disclose videos. Eventually, enforcement measures will be added when creators fail to disclose.

For videos on more sensitive topics including health, news, elections, or finance more prominent labels will be shown in the video itself. Additionally, YouTube says it will add disclosure labels to videos even when creators do not add them, especially if the altered content has the potential to confuse or mislead people.

The new disclosures are meant to prevent users from being duped into believing that a synthetically created video is real, as new generative AI tools are making it harder to differentiate between what’s real and what’s fake. The launch comes as experts have warned that AI and deepfakes will pose a notable risk during the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

Viewers will start to see the labels across all YouTube formats in the coming weeks, starting with the YouTube mobile app, and soon on desktop and TV.

In November, YouTube detailed its AI-generated content policy, essentially creating two tiers of rules: strict rules that protect music labels and artists and looser guidelines for everyone else. Deepfake music, like Drake singing Ice Spice or rapping a song written by someone else, can be taken down by an artist’s label if they don’t like it.
