On a sunny morning in Nakuru, the We Are One Nakuru team assembled in town, buzzing with anticipation for a day of connection, laughter, and healing. We Are One, founded by Cruz Elton and coordinated locally by Christus, is an organization dedicated to supporting young individuals navigating mental health challenges by creating safe, joyful spaces for interaction and growth

The Journey Begins

Our adventure commenced as we boarded a matatu from Nakuru town, heading towards the historic Lord Egerton Castle. The journey was filled with excitement and chatter, setting the tone for the day ahead. Upon arrival, we waited for fellow participants who traveled by personal cars, and soon, our group was complete. After a brief wait for our event organizer, we paid the entrance fee and stepped into the castle grounds, ready to explore.

Exploring the Castle

The majestic Lord Egerton Castle, with its 52 rooms and rich history, provided a captivating backdrop for our day. We embarked on a tour, marveling at the art gallery and the castle’s intricate architecture. The castle, built between 1938 and 1954 by Lord Maurice Egerton, stands as a testament to unrequited love and has since become a popular site for visitors seeking both history and tranquility. We took numerous photos, capturing memories against the stunning scenery.

Games and Bonding

Post-tour, we gathered for introductions, sharing our names and a bit about ourselves, fostering a sense of community. The energy shifted to playful competition as we organized a boys-versus-girls race, with the girls emerging victorious amidst cheers and laughter. We then engaged in the “extender” game, stretching our creativity and physical limits.

Forming a circle, we played “Obingo” and “Peekaboo,” games that involved singing, pausing, and attempting to make the chosen person laugh without moving. These activities not only entertained but also strengthened our bonds, highlighting the therapeutic power of shared joy.

Sharing and Celebrating

After the games, we sat down to enjoy snacks and a beautifully decorated cake, symbolizing our shared journey and achievements. This moment of relaxation allowed for deeper conversations, where participants opened up about their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, reinforcing the supportive environment that We Are One strives to create.

Capturing the Moment

As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over the castle grounds, we seized the opportunity to take group photos, both outside and within the castle. The picturesque setting provided the perfect backdrop for our memories. Spontaneous dancing ensued, with music and laughter filling the air, encapsulating the day’s spirit.

Reflecting on the Experience

As the day concluded, we gathered our belongings and prepared to return home, hearts full and spirits uplifted. The event, meticulously organized by Christus under the guidance of Cruz Dela, was more than just a day out; it was a celebration of resilience, community, and the joy found in shared experiences.

We Are One continues to provide invaluable support to young individuals, reminding us all of the importance of connection, understanding and taking time to simply enjoy.

Friendship has always been a source of joy, support, and growth. Yet, as I’ve journeyed through various stages, I’ve come to understand that friendships, much like the seasons, evolve. Some friends are like spring blossoms, bringing brief beauty; others are steadfast like evergreens, enduring through time.

Along this path, I’ve encountered the complexities of jealousy, the pain of drifting apart, and the profound value of those who remain.

The Subtle Sting of Jealousy

There was a time when a close friend’s success stirred an unexpected emotion within me—jealousy. It wasn’t that I wished them ill; rather, I felt a pang of inadequacy, questioning my own achievements. This silent, seething emotion can erode relationships when unaddressed, leading to resentment and emotional stagnation. Experts suggest that acknowledging and managing such feelings through introspection and clear communication is crucial to preserving friendships.

I’ve learned that jealousy often stems from our own insecurities. Recognizing this, I began to celebrate my friends’ successes genuinely, understanding that their achievements didn’t diminish my worth. This shift not only strengthened our bond but also fostered personal growth.

When Paths Diverge

Not all friendships withstand the test of time. I’ve experienced the heartache of drifting apart from someone I once considered inseparable. Signs like one-sided effort, lack of support, or consistent negativity became apparent. Therapists emphasize that it’s natural for friendships to fade, especially when they no longer contribute positively to our lives.

Ending a friendship is never easy, but sometimes it’s necessary for personal well-being. Letting go allowed me to create space for relationships that are nurturing and reciprocal.

Cherishing the Lifelong Bonds

Amidst the ebb and flow of friendships, there are those rare connections that endure. These friends are the ones who celebrate our highs, support us through lows, and accept us unconditionally. Our bond is built on mutual respect, trust, and genuine happiness for each other’s successes.

Maintaining such friendships requires effort – regular communication, empathy, and shared experiences. But the rewards are immeasurable. These relationships provide a sense of belonging and stability, enriching our lives in profound ways.

Embracing the Journey.

Friendships are dynamic, reflecting our personal growth and life circumstances. By understanding the emotions that influence our relationships, like jealousy, and recognizing when to hold on or let go, we navigate the intricate dance of human connection.

In embracing the seasons of friendship, I’ve found that each relationship, whether fleeting or enduring, offers valuable lessons. They shape who we are, teaching us about love, resilience, and the beauty of shared human experience.
