“To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven.” ~ Ecc 3:1
Before you prosecute me for addressing a certain religion and singling out the others, think of it this way…a reference book, philosophers do that too right?

Now that I caught your attention, I’d like to bring up the story that everyone is too shy to talk about. The reality that strongly faces us but everyone seems to turn their faces aside!
I don’t know which of the two statistics is more precise than the next but I know that at least one is. At least one must be, right?

Its only been only been four months away from books and bells but sad it has come to this. Rape and transactional sex aside, that’s a whole other story! Story for another day, perhaps. I’m here to talk about those under the bracket of ‘consentual‘ sex. You know, that known boyfriend and girlfriend that was couple goals na walikuwa wanatesa…haha.

READ ALSO: HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO ASK FOR CONSENT

Children are a blessing and if all those believe that abortion is a crime, we’ll be welcoming 100k+ blessings by the end of the year or the next!!! With parents just two decades old or less apart, and responsibility for a life inflicted as a consequence of pleasure untimed!

At least most of them won’t face shame from the judging eyes of their schoolmates. But imagine how many will consider going back to school? Will forego their kid for ‘the key to success’? How many have parents doing well enough not to mind fending for another life as their own while still paying fees for the new mother to make a brighter future? With the economy on its knees, is it pain or pleasure to count another plate on the table? Dubbed ‘unwanted pregnancy’ , don’t you think the kid will inherit that unwantedness from here say and end up messed up psychologically? Leading them to depression, drugs, suicide or crime?

Marriage is for a purpose and waiting is for your own good!
What’s the beauty of a couple of minutes of pleasure under the covers if it’ll end up in 9 months of looking down in shame in the open and being cut off from a chance of a brighter future?
Many values have been lost on the way of never-present parents, uninterested teachers and ‘minding their own business’ elder siblings. Everyone is “self made” nowadays and the worth of society has been diminished!

I’m not so sure whether the question should be ‘who to blame’ but rather ‘how did I take part in this end game?’
With a world made up of connected fates, the fall of one equals the fall of us all! So as you work your way up, don’t turn a blind eye on whatever, at your arms’ reach, however small, you can change. Coz it might cost you the trouble of time now, and some little wisdom, but cost you an arm and a leg in future when it’ll be the missing link between you and reaching your ultimate goal.
In Swahili they say “usipoziba ufa utajenga ukuta”… Translation…” If you don’t fix a crack prepare to build a wall!”

I’m not much of a reader of books but I remember one of the famous reads in primary school was Ben Carson’s Gifted Hands and Think Big. One thing that disturbed me though was how most, actually almost all readers of the two ended up with one story at the end of the reads — “When I grow up, I want to be a cardiologist!”

Made me question the purpose of writing the books. Wasn’t it to serve as motivation? An eye opener? A discovery of self more than it was an adventure in the life of the author? Weren’t you supposed to read between the lines of struggle and come out with hope rather than copy and paste mechanisms? Basically, did the book serve its purpose as it is?

See, when we watched movies as kids, all we wanted to do afterwards was practise the martial arts we had seen, kick some asses and went as far as even trying to fly! The movies opened our imagination to impossibilities, according to us. But don’t you think it limited it to the creative, the one who came up with the idea? Don’t you think, rather than open our imagination, it focused us to the lens of the creative?

My point is, the brain is safer in comfort and as long as you are in your comfort zone you are not exploring your limits, your “impossibilities”. You are basically living pretty much below your potential.

I admire the few who read between the lines. Those who watched cartoons and thought of the drawing part of the creative, those who watched plays and looked at the society within them solving the problems that the society previously saw as norm, and those who read books, discern the knowledge and came up with something new, applicable in the world as we speak.

They say change is inevitable, but if it were fully true, don’t you think our societies would be far better than they are?

I cannot discredit the mind blowing architecture that has been over the years made out of Leonardo Da Vinci’s artistic mind or the advancements the city of the future, Singapore, has made out of their scarcity of land while others in their place just whined.

All I’m saying that everyone has their equally un/exploited potential but not all in the same field. And instead of just earning a living, it won’t hurt to leave a legacy! Why don’t you look in your own creative lens and tell me what you see?

🎵I hate you I love you
I hate that I love you
Don’t want to, but I can’t put
Nobody else above you
I hate you I love you
I hate that I want you
You want her, you need her
And I’ll never be her🎵
~ I hate you, I love you by Gnash

I miss you,
Times we shared,
Silly jokes we laughed to,
Photo shoots we weared,
The hard times we bared!

I hate (you),
That I wasn’t enough,
Shared with her a bed,
That you woke up to her

I hate (you),
Heart wants what it wants,
Can’t get you outta ma mind,
Why do I still love you?

I want you,
Wanted us so bad,
Got attached,
Wanted you to be the one.

I hate me,
No strings attached signed and sealed,
Agreed not to get feelings in the mix,
Yet jealous to see you love your one

I hate me,
That I had to be the one,
To see it all crumble down,
Be the sole reason why

I miss the nights,
The 3ams you sneaked out,
On most you were drunk,
Speaking of how you hated when you guys fight

I treasured these nights,
That you chose me over her,
Confided in me not her,
Where we’d talk dark to dawn about you and her

I hate me,
If only I saw the underlying love between your words,
That between us was and will ever be just her,
That you confided to avoid angry nights beside your love.

“Hapaa, tunacheza na manenoooo….Ngeli ni ya Genge!”~Jua Kali (self proclaimed GODFATHER OF GENGE). Genge is where it all started! Welcome to the Hip Hop Culture II!

So late last year, after a somewhat die-down of Genge, a new wave hit! Ethic Entertainment, a boy band from Umo, moved the masses with “Lamba lolo” getting over 4 million views and its lyrics on the tongue tip of every youth. Be it campus, highschool, primary….you mention it. Gengetone! That’s what the resurfaced and newly born Genge was labeled – it being a fusion of hip hop and dancehall. Unlike original Genge though, its fusion lies more on dancehall, hip hop taking a share or two.
With KFSB banning some of the songs and Ezekiel Mutua describing it as total pornography, Gengetone is becoming a hot controversial topic of discussion for many in Kenya.

There’s a thick line between the haters, and the loyal supporters and promoters of this vibe but no publicity is bad publicity. So sometimes, the more the haters the more the views. Fortunately or unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll stop singing along to this tune any time soon.

Of concern though is how toxic the lyrics are getting by the day. Nowadays kids as early as 9 are dating and if their hangout playlists sing in the lines of “Kaa ni vajo nyandua”, I’m afraid to conclude that the looming nightmares of rape and early/teenage pregnancies are here to stay!
In an age where ‘the future is female’ and feminists are everywhere preaching women empowerment, Gengetone is proving a barrier to beat and making it all a hustle with the objectification of the she. And the fact that the ‘leaders of tomorrow'(youth) are in unison with the ” Wamlambez, Wamnyonyez” vibe, makes the voice of Chimamandu, for a moment, seem to be on mute.

Music is therapeutic. But listening to these defaming lyrics, I’m just disgusted! Maybe they have come from far and maybe they have a story behind their rotten-to-the-core lyrics. All I know is that the 4 million views may have started as booming business, but the fact of the matter is that the message is reaching the young blood, corrupting the innocent and rotting those already compromised.

With this, I give you the go ahead to call me a hater, but sadly this hater will never add a shilling to the pile (at least not directly). It is my sincere hope that my concern reaches the masses though. And if there’s a way we could eradicate this vulgar message and disconnect it from the potentious….I’m all ears.

Tall dark and handsome awes the more in an exquisite three piece designer suit, a neat bowtie and some well polished shoes. On his right arm, walking together down the red carpet, is a woman, his woman! In a hugging dress, well figure flattering. A cleavage deep enough to suggestively expose her beautiful bust, a bare back to flaunt her shoulder blades and a slit all the way up her maxi to finesse her sexy legs with thicc enough thighs and killer calves more defined with the six inch heels. They proceed to the VIP seats eagerly waiting for the awarding event to begin.

Imagine how the grammies and BET awards are colorful, spectacular and just perfect for the evening but while at it, hold that thought for a few. Let’s go back to the admirable couple, just off their limousine, slowly walking down the ‘aisle’. More specifically to the woman, his woman and her outfit, that designer dress.

In the wake of crazy designer pieces and the classy matching up to the speedy trends, I tend to think that decency has lost its meaning. Especially when it comes to the female gender, the sensitive gender.

Our eyes are getting more comfortable with a slit slightly higher, a cleavage slightly deeper, a mini slightly shorter and a bare back slightly lower. Our bodies are getting used to a shoulder slightly more off and tops slightly more cropped. Just a little more skin exposed, a little more curves flaunted. Funny how when slightly more skin means no clothes, we are all up in arms rebuking.

With the new age of redefining, morality has gotten itself a new meaning –choice. And maybe has decency. A while back we all sang to the tunes of my dress my choice, didn’t we? Well, it has taken a while for us to see the impact of enjoying such beats. Suddenly our eyes are open to the true meaning of it. No dress, my choice.

The value of a woman lies a couple of layers beneath her skin. Sad how seeking approval has made the woman lose sight of that fact. Going crazy for slightly more likes from strangers to a point of losing herself in the hunt. An endless hunt for approval from people seated on the other end of the keyboard, a click of a button away to your gratification.

Honestly, I think it has gotten out of hand. Ilikuwa ifike kwa wazazi, now that it seems that the ball will forever be on our court, do we just say our hands are tied? What’s the invisible line to keep off in matters decency and dress code?

US will never forget the pain of 9/11 generations later as long as “911, what’s your emergency?” unit still stands and the airport and air space security intensifies. Neither will their foreign affairs ministry forget the twin bombing of their embassy in Kenya and their offices in Dar es Salaam, as a beautiful memorial park stands in the place of the embassy just at the edge of the Moi Avenue-Haile Sellasie junction as a memory of the pain. A reminder of the power of terror groups and how unsafe and helpless the human race is under the threat of their own kind.

Terrorism has claimed a lot of lives with their well planned suicide missions that their perfectly studied target either never see coming or took the responsible parties too long to respond to the given warning. Proving their point with the huge masses they hit and beating their chests over successful plots ranging from learning institutions such as Garissa, not sparing the wealthy in the case of Dusit and WestGate Mall.

Well known, deeply feared terror groups are not also easy to silence with the ultimate victory of the capture and kill of Osama bin Laden being monumental and proving exactly that. Their recruits(our peers) seemingly easily lured and their ‘missing child’ posters sometimes end up a futile search. Their bodies (when lucky), years later, brought home lifeless and labelled suicide bomber, a WANTED charge.

No one really fully understand their agenda with the likes of Boko Haram kidnapping young girls, raping them just to release them pregnant! The pain the likes of Isis, Al Qaeda, Al Shabaab and Boko Haram cause is endless and scars run deep untendered! Sad that some governments find the liberty to fund them with firepower just to pass their agenda.

Imagine having a husband, a bread winner, left home for work in the Co-op building that fateful day. The uneasable pain and confusion of where and how to start alone with three kids the bereaved wife must have felt, maybe sometimes like a dream to this day. Or the loss of the only hope left in a noble and struggling family after their undergraduate son succumbs in Garissa. Or the pain of losing a newly wedded wife and mother to be, who just left the house for light shopping and a stretch of her limbs.

Terrorists have their reasons. A revolution maybe among their top agendas. But how many lives later will they be contented? How many suffering generations later will their ‘dying for virgins’ slogan not be worth it? Basically, to what end?

Since time immemorial, we’ve looked at rape from one angle. One which we blame the victim. Where her dress was too short, her trousers too tight, her cleavage too suggestive. Basically, she asked for it. But if she really asked for it, would it really be rape? You can’t justify a sin by it being tempting, can you? How hard can it be to ask for consent?
Today though, I want us to switch focus from one angle to an aerial view. More like the flip side of the coin. So, shall we?
What causes rape really? What are the motives behind this dehumanizing act?
The World Health Organization(WHO) states that the principal factors that lead to the perpetration of sexual violence against women, including rape, are:

Beliefs in family honor and sexual purity;

Attitudes of male sexual entitlement;

Weak legal sanctions for sexual violence.
Of the three, I want us to look at the second: Attitude of male sexual entitlement!
Sexual aggression is openly described as one of a masculine characteristic. Rarely do we look at the boy child when it comes to matters teenage pregnancies. Sadly, it is not any different when it comes to rape. There is rarely much social pressure to control young men or persuade them that coercing sex is wrong.
Families prioritizing honor over acceptance end up denying association with the rape victims when there happens to be blood ties, and if strangers, choose to avoid the topic all together. A culture of blaming women and not punishing men is a breeding ground for this henious act, don’t you think?
In this century, the 21st, I’m just disappointed, disgusted and sad to see how men respond to rape cases.
A while back, on our tym platform (sourced from Twitter), a situation was posed. A wife to be or a girlfriend raped by three men on her way home. Question is, would you still stick around or pass?
Myself, I really didn’t see the essence of two options coz only one made sense, stay. Why? This lady has just gone through hell! Trauma! She feels dehumanized and the least you can do is offer a shoulder to cry on. She badly needs emotional support and not you thinking of how much cumm the three beasts left in her🤦. She needs you to tell her that you still love her despite her not loving herself at the time. She needs you to direct her to a therapist and work through it all together, or at least try. She was the wife to be, wasn’t she? Just a couple of months away from confessing vows. For better for worse, in sickness and in health, till death do you part? Well now she needs you more than ever. Will you let the three beast that violated your lady do you part?
Well, that’s just what I thought, my opinion. Then reality hit like a hot slap of failure after a huge investment of yourself. If you only saw that thread😞:
“She’s now trash”
” What was she doing out late?”
” Why wasn’t I with her?”
” She’s unfixable”
And it gets worse… These are just the decent ones. A picture of young men talking however they like. Would a little empathy hurt? I mean, this is a human being we’re talking about. She might have been going through depression at that moment. Wouldn’t your comments just make her not think twice on implementing those suicidal thoughts she’s been having? Isn’t this toxic environment encouraging this impunity?
So, before you tell a lady to avoid dresses in parties and do jeans, would you please pass the message to your fellow broz whose zip seem intentionally loose to keep off the parties instead? If being patient enough for a green light of pleasure is too much to ask, keeping your D to yourself shouldn’t be. Your horny ass will survive the night, and gladly save the lady a lot more, to say the least…HER LIFE.

Many of our folks are deeply disturbed by this “noise we mistake for music”. With Ezekiel Mutua publicly expressing his disgust and loyally representing their honest and concerned plea when it comes to the impact of the vulgar language and visual publicization of sexuality they expose us to. I really don’t blame them.

They’re being parents after all! And when I listen to some lyrics play out loud in a nganya maybe, I begin to see their point and feel like its kinda getting out of hand! From enjoying relatable love lyrics as they slowly practised a two-step on the dancefloor to grinding on a stranger and ‘dancing’ like crazy?! Too fast a drift don’t you think?

With a fast changing world, where you have to conform with the trending else be labelled uncool (as if it matters), few are left feeling the richness of Jazz and enjoying the rhythm of soul-touching house music. The crowd, on the other note(get the joke?), turn up for hip hop concerts and sing in the lines of Nicki, Lil Wayne, the Queen B and his huzzie Jay Z. The likes of Cardi start of your weekend with Clout and Breezy’s pills and automobiles you can’t resist singing along to. I mean, do you even sleep when you hear Trey Songz is in town?

This is the hip hop culture!! Having a rich history of legends behind it (the likes of Shakur and Biggie), hip hop culture has a mixture of good and bad written all over it. Its your opinion which side of the scale tips but fact remains, more songs, albums and records will be launched regardless.

Hip hop culture is the one of the reasons for all these non apologetic cussing you hear today, the dress code dubbed ‘My dress my choice’ a few years back and the drug and substance abuse they portray as cool and classy. Being the role models they are in youngsters’ small minds, who would question the showcase of lavish, admirable lifestyle they portray as ideal? Who would even want to know their current mental and physical health status behind those gold chains and latest ride?

With the big of platform they are given and the huge masses this industry impacts, its urgent they find a common voice to speak. With their different tunes, form a harmony of positive impact rather than destruction. Yeah, it sells, cashes in at the end of the 5min concert perhaps. But do you count the dollars like you count their destroyed fate? Lost in drugs with your names in their tastes?

“Actually, if you look beyond the ” noise” in hip hop you’ll find some deep form of art. I mean, you get an artiste like Young Star* for instance, who is a powerhouse conscious racist. His lyrics influence you in a positive way and expose the divided nature in this beautiful city we live in (Cape Town). It’s not always bad, like everything in life I guess. ” ~ Puleng Vezi (character name), Blood and Water 2020 S01E02

I don’t know about Young Star but how about you? What’s hip hop culture for you? Which side of the scale tips according to you?

I don’t know how you guys do it, but mastering the names of 11 players and their subs for over I don’t know how many teams! Their coaches, managers, hobbies, lifestyle to their whole biography!!! Better than themselves sometimes! You know what I’m talking about…. FOOTBALL!! or is it SOCCER?

Games back on and the rate you’ve started setting your schedule just to ensure you block out the 90 minutes+ is just a marvel to me. La Liga! Premier league! I don’t know if Champion’s League is in season too. I just don’t know how you do it!!… But let’s just say it all boils down to passion.

Myself, I’m a fan of Chelsea and honestly, the last time I watched their game was when Conte was their coach/manager…hahaha! and I heard the Eden Hazard (captain) sale. But for now I left it at Liverpool almost taking the cup home and for that I thank the football fanatics I have for friends and their WhatsApp statuses.

About passion though, sports section in particular, basketball comes to heart. I played this Michael Jordan/Lebron James/Stephen Curry sport in highschool and basing on my appearances on court after classes, whatever come may, it was obvious that I really loved it!

The competitive games during practice were a learning spot as much as they were fun! Making that unpredictable perfect pass winding up in a swish…damn!! I don’t think I have the right words to describe the feeling.

The hot games were those between seniors – those who’d mastered the art from the crisscross dribbles, the sharp bounce passes to the techniques that always lead to either a 2-point or 3-point basket, no rebounds required! Did I mention their perfect chemistry? Intercepting those well calculated passes made one feel like they’d won a golden boot in football (haha). What about having a strong defense, tight enough not to cut through to make a layup and throw in a basket? That was like being the defenders of the season (if there’s anything like that in football…hehe)! We all worked our way up the pedestal we had bestowed on them and I’d say it was a beautiful journey.

What I cherished most about the team is the bonding sessions that loosened us up and the meetings we had every Friday that grew us a family, from having prayer partners (we called them peeps), presentations that made us appreciate the other side but for the sport skills and the reviews from the strict team manager on our overall progress… All to achieve the team spirit and I’d say it worked pretty well. We were a team in and out of court. And that helped a big deal during the Opens, friendlies with the nearby university and as we worked our way up to the Nationals.

Not blowing my own horn, but I left quite a legacy with my successors. Lessons about always pressing hard and how limitless our potential is and there being no impossibility when it came to exploring that potential!

Passion drives us, overdrive sometimes. The heart wants what it wants, right? And if it’s from the heart it’s from a good place, so overdrive might not be so bad afterall. At the moment, my sport passion is paused at awesome memories and irreplaceable fun times. Maybe the play button will be pressed in due time, who knows?
But enough about me, how about you? What’s your passion?

When’s the last time you had a good long loud laugh? I mean where your jawbone started aching, your ribcage cracking and tears busting the banks of your eye lids. Kenan osyanju alias Khoja Local is the talk of the town, he has mastered his art and delivers the best quality that you can ever come across. TYM caught up with him on the social media streets and here is what he has to say

Who is Khoja local?

Khoja Local is a young man Kenyan with Luhya roots, who’s always happy.

What’s the origin of the name?

Well, Khoja is a shrub version of “Khocha” which is a Luhya name for “uncle”. Back in 2018, while working in a club in Bungoma town as a cleaner. I had a coworker who used to call me Khoja, that’s how it spread and soon afterwards everyone called me so.

Tell us a bit about what you do, about the world of vines?

Well, I’m a hustler doing menial jobs, anything legal is doable to me. Moreover, I do comedy, write songs, scripts and also act…I also go to church on Sundays (laughs)

About your journey?

It started all the way when I was still a kid. At one moment in class 4, I noticed that everyone around me was ever happy and therefore made a lot of friends. I never noticed the comedy in me by then. Later on when I joined Teremi high school, I would participate on talent shows held once a year in the school. I’d mimic different personalities within the school and would outshine everyone in the game. This time round too, I didn’t think a lot about it. After high school in 2016, My mother had no enough money to take me to collage so I resorted to hustling, I got a little cash, went to Nairobi at Riccobeatz to record a song which was very much disgusting. Haikunipendeza…I felt like a looser haha. Moving forward to 2018, I recorded another song which did much better but didn’t hit the airwaves. That’s how I ended giving up on music. A year later in 2019 while relaxing at home, I jokingly mimicked how Luhya women talk, uploaded it WhatsApp status then went offline. Later on it was on my contacts statuses as well, they had shared it, been doing vines since that day.

Is doing vines a part time or something you do full-time?

It has become a full time job since the genesis of the Covid-19.

What type of challenges do you come across?

Since I’m broke sometimes I lack money to upload my vines. Therefore, the main challenge currently is lack of sponsorship.

In the rise of many people who do vines, and funny videos in places like tik tok, how do you make sure you capture the attention of your audience and separate yourself from them?

My uniqueness stands out. I always invest much time and attention to the punchlines so that they sound great to my fans.

What’s the source of inspiration for your content?

My culture and originality inspires me a lot. I am always proud of my culture.`.

How do you balance your social life and personal life?

It’s not that difficult, even when walking around interacting with fans and other people becomes easy because I keep it simple. Back at home it’s just the same, same chores just like my siblings, nothing special really.

Who do you look up to in the industry?

Josh2Funny, the Nigerian makes me laugh a lot. Another one is Mondy, the Tanzanian comedian and also Flaqo Raz here in Kenya. Just the trio at the moment.

What made you venture in it?

I love it when I make people smile, that factor inspired me most to venture into comedy.

Who is your target audience and what specific message to do pass across?

People of all walks. kids love my content because I use a kid’s voice which is always funny, on the other hand, teens like my content because I talk of love youths like my content because I talk of love relationships and parents love my content because I do skits talking about family issues. I pass peace and love in all my skits.

What’s your advice to the young people looking to venture in the field?

Hard work, prayers and humility. Nothing comes easy and no big artist offers them a platform for their growth. This is the time for them to grow.

Parting shot?

I love all my fans and I won’t disappoint them in any way as long as they keep supporting me,
